Lutte, femmes, liberté : trois mots qui disent quelque chose du sillon que creuse la chorégraphe ivoirienne Nadia Beugré.
Legacy est sa dernière pièce, pièce de groupe et d’héritage : héritage de la marche de Grand-Bassam où des Ivoiriennes furent passées à tabac, héritage de la reine ghanéenne Pokou dont la légende dit qu’elle sacrifia son fils pour sauver son peuple, héritage de toutes les femmes en marche qui n’ont pas accepté de simplement se taire. La danse puissante, musculaire et investie de Nadia Beugré est d’évidence sa propre façon de marcher, voire de courir, de courir sans fin, pour (se) manifester.

Women, freedom, struggle: three words to suggest the creative direction explored by Côte d’Ivoire choreographer Nadia Beugré in her work. Legacy is her latest piece, a group work, and a work of heritage: the heritage of the Grand-Bassam women’s march of 1949, when Ivorian women marching for their incarcerated men’s freedom were stopped, beaten and killed by the police; the heritage of the legendary Ghanaian Queen Pokou, who sacrificed her son to save her people; the heritage of all women who march because they will not be silenced. Nadia Beugré’s powerful, muscular, radical dance forms express her own march for freedom, her never-ending race to protest and be heard.
