QUOI, bien sûr, raconte une histoire. On y croise un éboueur, une institutrice, un patron et une rentière.
Mais dans QUOI, ce ne sont pas vraiment les histoires – d’amour ou d’argent – qui comptent. Importent plutôt les institutions qui organisent notre vie : travail, nation, famille… C’est dans cet imaginaire institutionnel que piochent actrices et acteurs pour jouer au grand déballage. Qu’y a-t-il dans QUOI alors ? « Une fiction, de la musique live, du social et de l’intime, la fable de la construction de la première société, du théâtre dans le théâtre, de la merde et des paillettes » dit Marc Vittecoq, membre éminent du collectif Jeanne Candel / Cie La Vie brève, en résidence au Théâtre de la Cité internationale. Et encore on ne dit pas tout.

Inevitably, obviously, QUOI (“What”) tells a story. We meet a sewerman, a primary school teacher, a boss, a woman with a private fortune . Except that in QUOI, the stories – of love, or money – are not really the thing. What truly matters are the institutions that structure our lives: work, nationhood, family. Delving into these institutions of the imagination, the cast unpacks secrets within secrets. “What”, then, is QUOI?: “A fiction; live music; public and private lives; the myth of the construction of the first society; a play within a play; shit and sequins,” says MarcVittecoq, a member of Jeanne Candel’s acclaimed collective La Compagnie de la Vie Brève (‘The Short Life Company’), in residence at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale. It is all that, and more, too.
